Valtrex and Famvir are both FDA-approved medications used to treat herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections.
A study published in the journalCirrhosis &opl speciesfound that valacyclovir, a brand-name drug that is used to treat shingles, has a similar antiviral activity to Famvir. The researchers, led by Dr. John G. Thompson, of the University of Texas Medical Branch, studied the drug to see if it would have the same effect.
The results showed that the antiviral effects of valacyclovir were similar to those seen with Famvir. The medication's active ingredient is acyclovir, a type of anti-herpes agent.
“This medication is not an anti-herpetic agent, but it is an antiviral agent,” said Dr. Thompson, a professor of dermatology at the University of Texas Medical Branch and a co-author of the study.
Acyclovir is an antiviral drug that works by inhibiting an enzyme called type II 5-alpha reductase.
The enzyme converts acyclovir to acyclovir-Acyclovir, which is an inhibitor of DNA gyrase. Acyclovir-Acyclovir is used to treat shingles and the associated pain caused by the herpes simplex virus.
“Acyclovir-Acyclovir does not have antiviral activity and so it is safe to use,” Thompson said. “Acyclovir-Acyclovir is also safe for patients with the herpes simplex virus, but it is not an antiviral drug.”
The drug is effective against HSV infections of the skin, mouth, and mucous membranes, including genital herpes, cold sores, and shingles.
“Valtrex works by inhibiting the replication of viral DNA,” Thompson said. “It has been used to treat cold sores and genital herpes.”
It is also used to treat shingles, which is caused by a virus that causes shingles. The antiviral action of valacyclovir is similar to that of famciclovir, a drug used to treat genital herpes.
Although the medication is not effective in shingles, it is effective against the herpes simplex virus, as well as the herpes zoster virus, a type of virus that causes chickenpox.
